FAQs

Why Nautilux is different

Q: What makes Nautilux dive torches different?

A: We believe the best dive torch is one that provides focused light, dependable runtime and simple operation every time you enter the water.

Every Nautilux torch combines a purpose-built, aerospace-grade aluminium housing with carefully selected LEDs, focused reflectors, tempered-glass lenses, replaceable high-capacity batteries and intuitive magnetic controls.

Our narrow beams are designed to punch through the water and minimise backscatter, while IPX8 pressure testing to 100 metres, double O-ring sealing and two-metre drop testing provide confidence in demanding dive conditions.

With four purpose-built models, divers can choose the compact power of the Pocket Rocket, the adaptable performance of the Explorer, the maximum output and runtime of the Powerhouse or the dedicated red beam of the Darkside.

Real-world tested. Simple, reliable and built to perform dive after dive.

Q: What is the expected lifetime of a Nautilux torch?

A: Nautilux was established in 2019 and our torches are designed to provide years of dependable service. If not lost to the depths many of our first batch of torches have continued performing dive after dive still going strong 7 years later on their original batteries.

Over the 7+ years we have never received a report of an O-ring failure resulting in a flooded torch or a cracked or broken tempered-glass lens.

The service life of any dive torch depends on its use and care. Completely tighten the housing before entering the water, rinse the closed torch thoroughly in fresh water after every dive, maintain the O-rings and recharge the battery after use to ensure years of use from your torch.

Every Nautilux torch is backed by our comprehensive 18-month warranty against manufacturing defects but we stand by our products and will always try to help out if possible.

Batteries and charging

Q: How do I get the most life out of my battery?

A: Avoid leaving lithium-ion batteries at a low charge. Recharge your torch after each dive, disconnect it once charging is complete and do not leave it continuously connected to the charger.

Always allow the closed torch to dry completely before opening the charging port or battery compartment.

For long-term storage, keep the battery partially charged in a cool, dry location and check its charge periodically.

Q: Can I swap in spare batteries?

A: Absolutely. Replaceable spare batteries are useful for multi-day trips, extended dive sessions or those occasions when you arrive at the dive site and realise your torch was not recharged.

Carrying a compatible spare also lets you keep diving with confidence throughout longer days. Always transport spare batteries in a protective case and never carry them loose alongside keys, coins or other metal objects.

Q: How long will the battery last before it needs replacing?

A: Our rechargeable batteries are rated for approximately 500 charge cycles, although their actual service life depends on use, charging habits, storage conditions and temperature.

Many batteries supplied with torches purchased when Nautilux launched in 2019 are still performing. With proper care and regular recharging after dives, you can expect many years of dependable service.

All Nautilux batteries are replaceable, so a worn battery does not mean replacing the complete torch.

Q: Are all Nautilux torches rechargeable?

A: Yes. Every Nautilux torch is supplied with a rechargeable, replaceable lithium-ion battery selected to provide dependable output, practical runtime and long-term performance.

Q: Can I charge the torch without removing the battery?

A: Yes, depending on the model.

The Darkside, Pocket Rocket and Explorer have USB-C charging ports built into the base and can be charged without removing the battery.

The Powerhouse uses two removable batteries that are charged in the supplied charging cradle.

Always ensure the torch and charging area are completely dry before opening the housing or connecting a charger.

Construction & manufacturing

Q: Are Nautilux torches tested before sale?

A: Yes. Every Nautilux torch is inspected and function-tested before dispatch to confirm that the light, controls, charging system and seals are operating correctly.

Our torch designs are also pressure-tested to 100 metres and drop-tested to two metres to verify their performance under demanding conditions.

Q: Do Nautilux torches use magnetic switches?

A: Yes. All Nautilux torches use intuitive magnetic switches or buttons designed for simple, reliable operation while wearing gloves.

Because the controls operate magnetically through the housing, no moving switch shaft needs to pass through the torch body. This reduces potential wear around the switching mechanism and helps maintain reliable sealing.

Q: Do Nautilux torches have wide or narrow beams?

A: All Nautilux torches use focused beams designed to minimise backscatter and direct the available light where it matters.

A focused beam cuts effectively through both clear and murky water and reaches deeper into caves, holes and ledges.

Wide flood beams can be useful for close-range photography and video in clear water, but they generally illuminate more suspended particles and provide less reach when searching through the water column.

Q: How deep can I dive with my Nautilux torch?

A: Nautilux torches are IPX8 rated and pressure-tested to 100 metres, making them suitable for recreational and advanced diving within that limit.

Double O-rings at the threaded sealing points provide added protection against water ingress. The torch must always be correctly assembled, completely tightened and properly maintained before entering the water.

Q: Will my torch survive being dropped or knocked?

A: Nautilux torches are drop-tested to two metres onto hard surfaces and built to handle the knocks associated with boat decks, rocky ledges, gear bags and concrete ramps.

No torch is completely indestructible, so inspect the lens, housing, threads and seals after a significant impact before taking it back underwater.

Q: What materials are Nautilux torches made from?

A: Nautilux torch housings are precision-machined from aerospace-grade aluminium and fitted with tempered-glass lenses.

Their corrosion-resistant finish, textured surfaces and knurled edges provide exceptional durability, a secure grip and a clean, premium appearance.

Q: Are Nautilux torches waterproof?

A: Yes. Nautilux torches are designed for saltwater use and pressure-tested to 100 metres.

Waterproof performance depends on the torch being correctly assembled and maintained. Always inspect the O-rings and sealing surfaces, completely tighten every housing section before entering the water and rinse the closed torch thoroughly in fresh water after diving.

Read our Torch Care guide for complete maintenance instructions.

Q: What accessories are available for my torch?

A: We offer spare batteries, lanyards and our low-profile Torch Clamp for mounting the Pocket Rocket or Darkside to lobster loops and snares.

We also keep replacement components available to support and maintain our torches wherever practical. If you need a component that is not listed online, contact us and we will help identify the correct part.

Care & Maintenance

Q: How do I make sure my torch lasts?

A: Follow these simple steps to support long-term reliability:

Completely tighten every housing section before entering the water.

Keep the torch closed while soaking and rinsing it thoroughly in fresh water after every dive.

Allow the closed torch to dry completely before opening the charging port or battery compartment.

Inspect the O-rings and sealing surfaces regularly.

Recharge the battery after diving and disconnect it once charging is complete.

Do not store lithium-ion batteries at a low charge.

Read our complete Torch Care guide for more information.

Q: Do I need to maintain the O-rings?

A: Yes. Inspect the O-rings regularly for sand, hair, cuts, flattening or twisting, and make sure the sealing surfaces are clean.

Apply a light coating of suitable silicone O-ring lubricant as needed, or at least once a year. Avoid applying too much, as excess lubricant can attract sand and debris.

Replace any damaged O-ring before taking the torch underwater.

Where is best to use the Nautilux torch?

Where Can I Use a Nautilux Torch?

Short answer: Everywhere!

Q: Are Nautilux torches suitable for lobster and cray diving?

A: Absolutely. Nautilux torches use focused beams designed to illuminate caves, holes, ledges and reef walls while minimising backscatter.

Choose the Powerhouse for maximum white-light output, the Explorer for adjustable all-round performance, or the compact Pocket Rocket for pocket carry or mounting to a loop or snare.

The Darkside is purpose-built for lobster hunting. Its dedicated red beam remains clearly visible to the diver while the lobsters encountered during real-world use showed hardly any reaction to the light.

Q: Are Nautilux torches suitable for spearfishing?

A: Yes. Their focused beams help divers search caves, holes, ledges and reef structure without unnecessarily illuminating the surrounding water.

The rugged aluminium construction, simple magnetic controls and practical range of sizes make it easy to select a torch that suits your spearfishing setup.

Q: Are Nautilux torches suitable for night diving?

A: Yes. We particularly recommend the Powerhouse for night diving because it provides our highest output, strongest beam and longest runtime.

The adjustable Explorer is another strong night-diving option, while the compact Pocket Rocket and Darkside suit shorter dives or can be carried as a backup.

More light is not always better in poor visibility, as excessive output can increase backscatter. Choose an output suited to the conditions and always carry an independent backup light when night diving.

Q: Are Nautilux torches suitable for freediving?

A: Yes. Nautilux torches are compact, easy to operate while wearing gloves and available in sizes suited to different freediving styles.

They can be carried by hand, secured with a lanyard, stored in a wetsuit pocket or mounted to a lobster loop or snare using our Torch Clamp.

Q: Are Nautilux torches suitable for scuba diving?

A: Yes. Nautilux torches are IPX8 rated and pressure-tested to 100 metres, making them suitable for recreational and advanced scuba diving within that limit.

Focused beams, dependable runtimes and simple magnetic controls make them suitable as primary or backup lights, depending on the model and dive plan.

Q: Can Nautilux torches be used for general diving?

A: Yes. Nautilux torches are designed for a wide range of underwater activities, including reef diving, foraging, spearfishing, lobster diving, scuba diving and night diving.

Each model serves a different purpose, allowing you to choose between compact portability, adjustable output, maximum power and runtime, or dedicated red light.

Q: Can I use my Nautilux torch on land?

A: Yes. Effective heat dissipation allows Nautilux torches to operate both in and out of the water.

They are suitable for camping, night walks, boat decks, equipment checks and other situations requiring a powerful, durable and portable light.

Q: Can I use a Nautilux torch for hunting?

A: Yes. Their focused beams, rugged construction and practical runtimes make Nautilux torches suitable for lawful land- and water-based hunting activities that require dependable illumination.

Always follow the relevant hunting, wildlife and spotlighting regulations for your location.
